Hippos R Us
The hippopotamus must qualify for the weirdest looking mammal on the planet. Like the rhinoceros and crocodile, it looks positively prehistoric. Their name comes from the Greek for ‘water horse’, looking at its face front-on you can kind of understand why. The hippo looks like a lumbering, slow kind of animal, however its speed on land is pretty nifty and underwater it moves along the bottom with agility and grace. The hippo is one of the most dangerous creatures in Africa – killing more humans than lions. Fights between male hippos are noisy and spectacular affairs, often resulting in death. Hippos can eat large quantities of grass – often guzzling 40Kg for one meal. They are usually spotted lounging in the water which protects them from the intense heat and sunburn.
